Can’t complete the transit in time? What should the carrier do?
🚛 An accident on the road, force majeure, circumstances beyond your control — and suddenly the transit deadline has passed. Sound familiar? The main thing is not to panic: the time taken to deal with such circumstances and their consequences is not counted towards the transit deadline. But to take advantage of this, you need to act correctly and in good time.
Here’s what you need to do:
Notify the customs authority — and do so before the transit period expires
Write to the nearest customs authority and state:
— what has happened (the specific accident or force majeure event);
— where the goods are currently located;
— where the vehicle is located;
— the number of the document controlling the movement of goods.
⏰ This is critical: the notification must be sent before the transit period ends, not after.
Provide documentary evidence of the accident or force majeure
Without written confirmation, the situation will not be recognised — so make sure you have the evidence ready in advance.
If the goods are lost in whole or in part, your task is to preserve what remains and prevent it from being used.
In the presence of a customs official, a report is drawn up detailing: discrepancies between the goods and the documents, damage, issues with packaging or labelling, or loss.
